The Vale of Glamorgan is noted for its fine Victorian country houses, built to reflect an age of optimism – and, for the fortunate few, opulence. Coed-y-Mwstwr is a prime example. Gabled, red-bricked and tall-chimneyed, the mansion certainly looks the part. And the theme carries on inside, with plush furnishings, polished floors, open fireplaces, high ceilings and cosy corners where you can curl up with a book or magazine. That’s not to say that Coed-y-Mwstwr is a dyed-in-the-wool 1880s-style country house hotel. Subtle refurbishment has introduced a touch of the new, with a mix of bedroom styles that appeal to a wide audience. And, in keeping with today’s trends, there’s an emphasis on the food – an interesting seasonal menu that, just like the hotel, offers traditional favourites with a modern twist.

Two things that remain constant are the hospitality and calm atmosphere. Your friendly host, Melanie Hancock, sums it up: ‘We have a great team here – it’s like a little family. Nothing is too much trouble for us.’ The calmness comes from the hotel’s splendid isolation at the end of a long private drive that winds its way up a wooded hillside to Coed-y-Mwstwr’s 20-acre grounds. Here you’ll find sunny south-facing terraces, a tennis court and superb modern Leisure Club with large gymnasium, sauna and steam room. This little oasis is only minutes off the M4 motorway. It’s close to Cardiff and Swansea, the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and the Brecon Beacons. For golfers, it’s right next door to Coed-y-Mwstwr Golf Club.
