This spectacularly located hotel is Wales’s answer to a baronial retreat in the Scottish Highlands. It stands in splendid isolation on a forested hillside overlooking the dramatic, mountain-ringed waters of Lake Vyrnwy. It’s worth staying here for the views alone. But when you add the hotel’s other assets – its country house comfort, excellent food, impeccable service and exceptional range of sporting and country pursuits – you’ll understand why Lake Vyrnwy has such a faithful following.

There’s an air of grandeur – not to mention a rare appreciation of traditional values – at this spacious, dignified hotel, with its pitch pine, deep leather chairs, soft furnishings, log fires and wealth of antiques. The bedrooms are individually decorated, and many have special features such as lake views, four-posters, suites and whirlpool spa. All 14 of the superb new rooms completed in 2007 have lake views and private balconies – and there’s a superb new spa and treatment suite with a pool, exotic showers and relaxing range of therapies and massages. The food complements the surroundings, with seasonally changing menus making the very best of local produce and game from the estate. Tear yourself away from this cosseting hotel and you’ll find yourself in the midst of a 24,000-acre estate, renowned for its natural beauty and rich wildlife. The hotel makes the most of its location, offering everything from birdwatching to clay shooting. There’s also classic fly fishing on Lake Vyrnwy and miles of tracks and paths to explore.
