Those who think that Llangoed Hall is the usual ‘country house’ hotel are in for a surprise. On entering, you’ll find few of the usual hotel features. There’s no reception desk, for example, a deliberate omission as part of Llangoed’s philosophy of creating the atmosphere and ambience of a grand house rather than a hotel. It’s an aspiration that’s entirely successful. Comfort combined with quiet efficiency is Llangoed’s hallmark, provided by your experienced host Mark Green and his excellent staff. You can curl up with a newspaper or book and be attended to in a personable, professional manner. Or simply savour the exceptional surroundings – the open fireplaces, gleaming grand staircase, panelled library and upstairs gallery, all adorned with fresh flowers, antiques and paintings.

This outstanding hotel is the brainchild of Sir Bernard Ashley, husband of the late Laura Ashley. A small fortune has been spent on renovating the hall, a dignified Jacobean mansion overlooking the grassy banks of the River Wye (with private fishing for guests). Everything has been accomplished with exquisite taste. Sir Bernard’s interest in textiles and design has a direct bearing. His fabrics company, Elanbach, is based at Llangoed Estate. Moreover, Llangoed – along with London and Paris – has one of only three Elanbach showrooms, and each bedroom is individually decorated with antique furniture and furnishings from the company. The cuisine, too, is exemplary, with a reliance on local, home-grown produce of the highest quality. It’s another part of Llangoed’s restful, refined personality.
