In Cornwall, fashionable Rock is the place to be. In Wales, Newport in north Pembrokeshire proves that it’s cool to be beside the seaside. And this classy little resort now has a suitably stylish place in which to stay. Llys Meddyg began life as a Georgian coaching inn. In its new role as an exquisite restaurant with rooms, it ticks all the boxes with today’s discriminating travellers. The creation of Louise and Ed Sykes, Llys Meddyg offers superlative accommodation and food. Georgian proportions and features provided the perfect canvas against which to remodel Llys Meddyg. Its mix of modern furnishings, antiques and deep sofas appeal to contemporary tastes, while the bedrooms – named after well-known artists and displaying original artworks – are large, bright and luxurious.

The food is another magnet. Under Ed’s watchful eye the experienced kitchen team serves inventive cuisine with the emphasis on local sourcing, seasonality and organic produce. There’s a sense of occasion to dining in the elegantly appointed restaurant or – in summer – alfresco in the tented Garden Room. You’ll want to partake of this latter option, for Llys Meddyg’s ‘secret garden’ is another prized asset. So too is the adjoining art gallery dedicated to the late Peter Daniels, an internationally renowned Pembrokeshire artist. It’s easy to see why Newport is a sought-after destination. It sits on an untouched stretch of coast beneath magical, mystical Carn Ingli, the ‘Mountain of the Angels’.
