It’s easy to see why visiting celebrities to Cardiff prefer to stay here rather than in the city centre. Miskin Manor, just 15 minutes away, has class and character. It’s a splendid 19th-century mansion, a touch baronial thanks to cavernous public rooms, lavish oak panelling, high plasterwork ceilings, leaded windows, chandeliers and grand staircase. But this air of space and grandeur doesn’t come with any frostiness or undue formality. The welcome is as warm, unaffected and genuine as you’ll get anywhere in Wales. Miskin Manor is no precious, cocooned country house. It’s a popular venue, a hotel reborn about a decade ago thanks to an extensive refurbishment carried out by the Rosenberg family.

Only the finest materials were used to bring this exceptional Grade II listed house back to life. Warm fabrics, comfy sofas and open fireplaces create an intimate atmosphere which belies its size. The bedrooms are warm and spacious too, in a mix of styles and colours ranging from subtle to striking. As you might expect, four-posters are not in short supply, and bathrooms are uniformly immaculate. An award-winning restaurant ensures that food is also high on the agenda. The hotel’s assets don’t end there. In the 22-acre grounds – a secluded haven of gardens, lawns and specimen trees – there’s a fabulous £1.5 million Health Club and Spa, with a large indoor pool, sauna, steam room, squash court and fully equipped gymnasium. This rural retreat is, surprisingly, just off the M4 motorway – it’s an ideal base for exploring South and West Wales.
