This former Victorian rectory is filled with all the trappings of luxury -– rich furnishings, antique pieces, chandeliers, fireplaces, gilded mirrors, luxury bathrooms and fresh flowers. But Neuadd Lwyd’s appeal doesn’t just rely on traditional comfort. Victoriana blends with the 21st century thanks to a well-balanced infusion of contemporary touches, from the flat-screen TVs/DVDs to the bold, modern choice of colours, especially in the faultless bathrooms, which come complete with fluffy bathrobes and an array of quality accessories. There’s more evidence of good taste and attention to detail downstairs, where guests can soak up the stylish atmosphere – and sink into the big sofas – in the beautifully appointed sitting room.

Its recent accolade as 'Welsh Country Hotel of the Year' comes as no surprise. Food is another high point. Your friendly hosts are Susannah and Peter Woods. Susannah trained at the world-famous Ballymaloe Irish cookery school. Only the finest and freshest locally sourced ingredients are used in creating exciting dishes, served in the elegant dining room. Breakfast is also a culinary occasion, with fresh fruits, seasonal goodies, freshly pressed juices and, yes, Welsh rarebit. Whatever they cook in Neaudd Lwyd they cook very well – don’t miss the melt-in-the-mouth welshcakes. Another attraction is the location, a tranquil setting with views across to the mountains of Snowdonia. Susannah and Peter like to share Anglesey's strong 'sense of place', culture and heritage with their guests. The island is dotted with historic sites, including an ancient church right next door. Neuadd Lwyd is usally open Wednesday to Saturday (please check). Closed December and most of January.
