If you like your coaching inns warm, hospitable and authentic, then you’ll like the Beaufort Arms. The cosy front bar – a favourite with locals – is just as it should be: a place to meet and chat without the distraction of manic machines or giant TV screens. The atmosphere’s the same in the larger bar, furnished in a comfortable modern style that blends nicely with the old beams and open fireplace. It doubles up as an informal, brasserie-style restaurant, an accompaniment to the Beaufort’s more formal main restaurant. Food, as you may have guessed by now, plays an important role here – no surprise really, for the Beaufort is in a very ‘foodie’ part of Wales where competition is fierce and standards are high.

The menu (plus daily chalkboard specials) places an emphasis on seasonality and locally sourced produce. The dishes are beautifully presented too – and excellent value for money. The same goes for the accommodation. The 16th-century inn was completely refurbished a few years ago. The bedrooms are fresh and neat, with crisp white linen and goose feather duvets. And it’s family run by Eliot and Jana Lewis, with the Rarebits personal touch. Today’s guests will also appreciate the location. The Beaufort is easily accessible on one of the main routes into Wales. It’s set in beautiful border country next door to Raglan Castle and close to the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons National Park.
