The Grove pulls off that most difficult of tricks: you immediately feel at home here, even though you’re wondering why your own house isn’t quite so fabulous. The homeliness comes from a warm-hearted house matched by warm-hearted hosts, Neil Kedward and Zöe Agar. The Grove’s fabulous looks take a little longer to explain. The substantial three-storeyed house is essentially Georgian with Victorian additions, the latter – in the striking Arts and Crafts style – giving The Grove an unusual, not to say quirky, character. Harmoniously (and generously) proportioned rooms are enlivened by arresting Arts and Crafts architectural features. And bringing everything bang up to date is the way in which The Grove has been reinvented as a boutique country retreat.

It’s a near-miracle, in time and taste. In little over a year Neil and Zöe have converted a wreck into an exquisite luxury bolthole. And they have done it their way. Boutique it may be, formulaic it isn’t. Faddy minimalism is out. Big, soft sofas, cleverly chosen fabrics and wallpaper, original fireplaces, wood panelling, timeless bathrooms, hushed tones and an eclectic array of artwork are very much in, creating an intimate – and highly individual – place to stay. Great attention is also being paid to the food. The concise, well-balanced menus are a homage to Pembrokeshire’s well-stocked larder of quality local produce. The Grove, on the doorstep of the fashionable little town of Narberth, is perfectly placed for exploring all of Pembrokeshire. It also has high quality self-catering cottages in its grounds.
