The flat rivermeadows of the Severn Estuary between Cardiff and Newport – known as ‘Little Holland’ – have an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Wales. There’s a place to stay here which is also quite unique. The Inn at the Elm Tree is, in every way, outstanding though it’s a difficult place to categorise – it’s certainly not a country pub in the conventional sense. Chef/patron Shaun Ellis and his enthusiastic team come close to capturing its ethos when they describe it as a ‘21st-century inn with traditional values’.

The bedrooms are, quite simply, faultless, with every conceivable convenience and all those little personal touches characteristic of a top hotel. And they cleverly blend a variety of styles and features, from cool contemporary to reassuringly traditional. The Inn has also established a reputation for culinary excellence. The restaurant has been carefully crafted to provide extremely civilised dining, based on a refreshing modern menu that combines British with a little European influence (the seafood, in particular, is outstanding). They do things very, very well at The Inn at the Elm Tree. Although it’s not the kind of place you’d necessarily pop into for a pint, you’ll enjoy a warm welcome and extremely relaxing surroundings. It’s an inviting, intriguing place, all the more so because of its atmospheric location in an undiscovered coastal village only 15 minutes from both Cardiff and Newport. Golf fans should note that it’s the nearest Rarebit property to Celtic Manor Resort, venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
