Every so often we come across a place that sends our enthusiasm levels off the scale. The Kinmel Arms is a restaurant with rooms – and what remarkable rooms! They are, in fact, four luxury suites that easily match some of the finest hotel accommodation in Wales. They tick all the designer boxes, from the handmade super king-sized oak and maple beds to the flawless bathrooms with their Spanish limestone and Indian quartzite floors.

Lynn and Tim Watson, a widely travelled couple, are behind the transformation of the Kinmel Arms. Local and global inspiration has worked wonders here. In mood and décor, the suites mirror the spirit of Wales’s landscapes and seascapes. Their clean, modern lines are enlivened by striking artworks and artefacts, many created by Tim – an accomplished artist – to express his passion for mountaineering, wildlife and travel. The ‘Arms’ part of Kinmel has also benefited from a contemporary makeover, giving it a funky, relaxed atmosphere. A resounding success with visitors and locals alike (not to mention the organisations that dish out foodie awards), it is noted for its flavoursome food cooked by one of North Wales’s leading chefs and served in a simple but creative way, letting the quality of the local produce shine through. Continental breakfasts, provided in the rooms, are another treat. It’s a great touring base for North Wales and is under an hour’s drive by car from both Chester and Caernarfon. But though just minutes off the A55 and North Wales coast, the Kinmel Arms is a haven of tranquillity, overlooking a wooded estate rich in wildlife. Closed Sundays and Mondays.
