Hay-on-Wye must be one of the most famous little towns in the world. At the last count this ‘town of books’ had around 40 booksellers, not to mention the many other shops selling antiques, art, craft and designer fashion. It’s a buzzy, cosmopolitan place. And now, thanks to a recent change of ownership and direction, there’s an appealing place to stay right in the centre of town (opposite the former cinema, in fact, which is now – you’ve guessed it – a bookshop). Your friendly and professional hosts Charles, Kathryn and Harry Mackintosh have accepted the challenge of returning the Swan – an auspicious old coaching inn – to its former glory, but more in the mould of a classic Georgian townhouse.

The spacious building has a natural, easy warmth. Already, much of the downstairs has been transformed. There’s a funky bar and bistro area with scrubbed pine tables and Parisian lithographs (a touch of ‘metropolitan rustic’) and a more formal dining room – plus alfresco dining in the Swan’s extensive gardens in summer. The food, a fusion of regional and Mediterranean influences, draws strongly on the area’s exceptional local produce. Most of the well-proportioned bedrooms are generously sized and are subject to an upgrading programme commencing in 2007. Hay straddles the Wales/England border, on the doorstep of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the black-and-white villages of Herefordshire. Local activities in this green, rolling border country include walking, canoeing, cycling… and reading.
