Hotels brazen in blowing their own trumpets often promise more than they deliver. The Penrallt isn’t like that. It goes about its business in an unassuming, quietly confident way, letting its service, food and surroundings speak for themselves. Its low profile in the past was perhaps due to its location overlooking the Ceredigion coastline, a part of Wales that is not as well known as Pembrokeshire. But take our word for it – it’s just as beautiful and, anyway, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is a mere six miles away.
The Penrallt is a handsome Edwardian house in its own 42 acres set amongst green fields that sweep down to Cardigan Bay. The generously proportioned rooms come in a variety of styles from luxury suites to ‘classic’ (some of which are located in the adjacent garden wing). Many have balconies and superb sea views.
The hotel has been refurbished over the last few years, with decor that complements the traditional character of this fine country house (its stained glass, fireplaces and ceiling plasterwork are exceptional) while acknowledging contemporary tastes. The Penrallt’s food is another revelation. It’s not on the foodie map - but it deserves to be.
The Bay Restaurant and more casual Terrace serve skilful, well-presented dishes based on locally sourced produce like New Quay sea bass and Pembrokeshire venison (and outstanding, properly Welsh breakfasts). The leisure centre within the grounds has an indoor heated pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and gym (plus an outdoor pool in summer). And you’ll be well looked after by hosts Gareth and Wendy Kinnair and their friendly staff.
