Rooms 11 Style Character
Thinking of opening your own restaurant with rooms? Then take yourself off to Plas Bodegroes to see how it should be done. On second thoughts, don’t go unless (a) you’re as good a chef as Chris Chown, and (b) your arty side encompasses not just picture-perfect creative cuisine but also an innate flair for colour and interior design.
It’s also true to say that Chris and Gunna Chown had a near-perfect canvas on which to work. Dreamy, creamy Plas Bodegroes is a Grade II Star listed Georgian manor house tucked away in peaceful grounds on the Llyn Peninsula. Any foodie following Chris’s stellar career will know that it was a ‘restaurant with rooms’ before the term became common currency. Consistently one of the top places to eat in Wales, it continues to dazzle with Chris and his team concentrating on the fundamentals of good food – honest, intense flavours, clever combinations, quality ingredients, local provenance, and inventive twists that are well-informed, not faddy. And you taste it in the most soothing of surroundings. Gunna oversees a restaurant that’s as assured as Chris’s cooking (as is the unfussy, seamless service).
With its art and ambient lighting, cool tones and deceptive simplicity (when things are this good they appear effortless), it’s a place you just want to be in – and not leave. Drag yourself away and you’ll find bedrooms cast in a similar mould of rustic chic. What a formula! What a menu! The restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday evenings; Plas Bodegroes is closed December, January and February.
