More Information

It’s fortuitous for all concerned that Ty Mawr and the McAlpines found each other. Experience hoteliers Martin and Catherine were looking for a new way of life. Ty Mawr, in a sad state less than 10 years ago, was desperately in need of huge amounts of tender loving care.

With Martin blazing the way – he’s a tireless host – Ty Mawr has achieved, in hospitality terms, what amounts to instant success, gaining top awards within a few years of opening for business in 2005. If you like well-proportioned Georgian architecture you’ll love Ty Mawr. The interior is defined by quality and quantity – characteristically spacious, well-proportioned rooms are furnished in a traditional style that suits the place perfectly.

The warm, classical but unfussy bedrooms are huge – easily some of the biggest in Welsh rarebits – the only unashamedly 21st-century ingredient being the sleek, high-spec (and again very big) bathrooms, many with Jacuzzis. As well as all the expected luxuries and facilities, the rooms have computers and free WiFi. Dinner – modern, flavoursome cuisine solidly based on the area’s exceptional local produce –  is served in an elegant room with polished wooden floors and soothing slate-blue walls. So here, in rolling farmlands just a few miles from the Cardigan Bay coast, you have a mansion reborn thanks to the McAlpines’ vision. It’s again part of the local community, not least because of one unique feature we’ve kept until last.

Downstairs there’s a miniature 27-seat cinema - ‘Flicks in the Sticks’ - open to residents and non-residents. Only Martin could have thought of that one.

Restaurant closed Sunday.
